Dorothy Haltom

Dorothy Olivia Haltom passed away June 6, 2009 in the Saline Memorial Hospice Center in Bryant. She was born on June 22, 1917 to Will and Madge Haltom of the Social Hill Community out of Malvern. After graduating from Malvern High School, she enrolled at Draughn's School of Business in Little Rock. In completion of her course, she was able to combine her love of history and politics by accepting a position in government in Washington D.C. She described her experience in Washington as the most exciting time of her life, but after several years when her mother and father both became ill, she returned to Little Rock and assumed total responsibility of her young sister. Her forty year career included bookkeeper and secretary for the House, Jewell, Holmes Law Firm and T.J. Raney Associates. After retirement she became a volunteer for the Little Rock Public Library, spending hundreds of hours volunteering. In 1994 she was presented a Governor's Volunteer Excellence Award by Jim Guy Tucker for outstanding volunteer service to the people of Arkansas. In her late 80's, she was still walking the six blocks to volunteer at the library. Her love of books she passed on to others, becoming known by the other tenants in her apartment building as "the Librarian." Her apartment was filled with books, and she shared her books with others and encouraged them to read when she entered the hospital shortly before her death, she was still reading five books a week with a magnifying glass. Dorothy was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Little Rock. Preceding her in death were her parents, her brother - Troy of Social Hill, and her sister - Roberta Levitz of California. She is survived by her niece Susan Levitz of Nevada City, California; two nephews: Bill Levitz of Nevada City, California, and David Levitz of La Jolla, California; two great nephews: Colby and Benjamin Levitz of California. A graveside service will be held 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at the Social Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Little Rock Public Library or the Social Hill Cemetery Association.
