Hallie Bell Case

Hallie Marguerite Bell Case, age 89, of Hot Springs Village, AR since 1989, died peacefully on August 25, 2008 surrounded by her daughters and ministers. Her memorial service will be held on Saturday August 30th 2:00 pm at Village United Methodist Church, 200 Carmona Road, Hot Springs Village, AR 71909. Born February 4, 1919 near Norcatur, KS, she was the only child of Clark and Winnifred Olmstead Bell. She married Dr. Glenn I Case, a veterinarian May 31, 1940. She was preceded by her parents, four half-brothers, one half-sister, her husband of 58 years and two daughters, Maritta and Krisann. She is survived by her daughter, Lesley Case, a nurse who lived with her and cared for her for many years; a daughter Glenna and her husband Harlan Garbell of Minneapolis, MN; a son, Clark Case and his wife Diane, and grandchildren Drew, Kelsey, Kira, and Grant of Winston-Salem, NC; and a granddaughter Robin Kearns, her husband Trevor, and great-grandson Cirdan of Greenfield, MA. Other family members include: Mengiste Ayele (born in Ethiopia), his wife Tina Dobrinich, their children Hana, Marta, Mikail of Bloomington, IL; Abrham and Sadie Ayele (born in Ethiopia) of Olathe, KS; and Dr. Osmario Vieira of Brazil. Hallie attended a one-room country grade school, Prairie View, and graduated from Norcatur Rural High School. She received a B.S. in Home Economics and Nursing from Kansas State University, a Diploma in Nursing from Kansas University, a Masters Degree from Bradley University in Guidance and Counseling, and a Masters Certificate in Nursing from the University of Illinois. Education was fundamental to her life. In addition to pursuing life-long continuing education she helped students fulfill their potential and apply for scholarships. She and her husband fostered three international students, one from Brazil and two from Ethiopia. Hallie worked in several fields of nursing prior to becoming Director of Nursing at Kewanee Public Hospital, Kewanee, IL, a position she held for more than 25 years. Her interests were eclectic. She loved to read, write, and collect books. She was a past-president of the Kewanee Chapter of Fortnightly and of the Auxiliary to the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association. She authored the History of the Auxiliary of American Veterinary Medical Association and her memoir Here's Hallie: Odyssey of a Rich Little Poor Girl (unpublished). A talented speaker, she provided educational programs for many groups. She broke down barriers for women and was the first woman to serve on some community boards. She was selected "Woman of the Year" by the Business and Professional Women's Club of Kewanee, IL and was listed in the "Who's Who of American Nurses. She was an active member of the Akansa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Hot Springs Village Rotary Club. She and her husband, Glenn, enjoyed travel and were fortunate to travel extensively in the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Africa, and Israel. Hallie loved the Village and the wonderful people in it. Before health problems prohibited it, she enjoyed playing bridge and water walking at the Natatorium. A 10-year cancer survivor, she belonged to a wonderful support group who became like a family during her battle with cancer. Memorials donations may be made to the HSV Animal Welfare League.
